There’s nothing better than watermelon during summer!
Being at the peak of the summer, fruits are the ideal choice to stay cool and hydrated. For me, fruit salads and smoothies are on the top of my preferences’ list this time of the year, since the abundance of seasonal fruits can offer me unique combinations, which will keep me full without making me feel “heavy”. So the other day, my neighbors knocked on my door and offered me half of a watermelon. Overall, I love this food exchange and offering that happens out of pure kindness, which is some kind of tradition between us and our neighbors. Taking the watermelon in my hands and as it was a morning hour, I immediately started thinking about the ideal combination -for me- regarding a smoothie. And voila! I made 2 glasses of smoothies, which I intended to drink with a friend of mine, but in the end I drank both of them myself. But it’s not a problem, since we can always make some more anytime…
What are the benefits of watermelon?
First of all, as I mentioned before, fruits are ideal for us to stay hydrated. More specifically, watermelon contains 92% water, while at the same time it is very filling with few calories. Watermelon is rich in vitamins C and A, which are important for the skin and hair, while also containing potassium, magnesium and lycopene. Lycopene is the element that gives red color to tomatoes and watermelon, as well as other fruits and vegetables and is considered to help prevent cancer. Lycopene can also help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Finally, the vitamins and minerals contained in watermelon contribute to the proper functioning of the heart.
