Are some products essential?
Yes! A thousand times, yes! Let’s say that there is a day when you are really busy and there isn’t enough time to go at the supermarket, or a day where a surprise visitor rings your doorbell and you have to prepare something fast and very tasty. What are your options? You open the fridge and create something with the materials you already have. However, the point is to have some basic products in your fridge, so that you will be able to create the meal of the day.
Fruits & Vegetables
Number 1 on the list are for sure the fruits and the vegetables. You always have to make sure that there is some lettuce or a tomato or something else to make a salad. A life saving option is the already boiled corn, which I personally keep in the refrigerator, so that I will always have some to add in my salads. At the same time, fruits are absolutely essential, as my breakfasts have as their main characteristic delicious and rich smoothies with fruits (Find great recipes for Smoothies here). Also, fruits are an ideal option for various dishes with vegan cheese, crackers and nuts. I love the combination of these kind of snacks with wonderful wines and relaxing music.
Parsley and other herbs
Who doesn’t love parsley, dill, mint and actually all the herbs in general? They always add a cool, unique taste and smell in everything we make. But how do we keep all these herbs fresh? We put our herb’s spring into a glass full of water. That’s how they will continue to be fresh for many days and we can use them like they are freshly cut from our garden. There is another alternative, though, the one I use. For the last year I have planted my favorite herbs in small pots -the ones I use the most- and every time I need them, I cut the exact amount I want to use with scissors, while at the same time I take care of them so they continue to grow and not only fill my food with flavor, but they will fill my house with their beautiful green colors.
Milk & Yogurt
The truth is that I usually make my own milk with nuts of my choice, but when I don’t have time to do so, I always make sure to have my favorite milk in my fridge, that I use either in my breakfast or in my cooking. The soy milk is one of those I usually use in sauces for salads, pasta and many other meals. Another one of my favorite milks is the brown rice, which, while it has no sugar (the one I buy), has its own unique sweetness that makes it special. As for the yogurt there are no words and picking one is really hard… Soy yogurt is ideal to make the most delicious tzatziki, while coconut or cashew yogurt is ideal for doughs or breakfast.
Olives & Pickles
SOS SOS SOS! I love olives and pickles so much that I can open one jar of each and, combined with bread, I can eat all of them in one day. That’s why they couldn’t be out of my “favorites and must-have products in the fridge” list! If we want to be objective, though, they are indeed very useful ingredients, as they are combined wonderfully with the dishes I mentioned above and they can satisfy your visitors for sure. Finally, there is a unique and very easy recipe for Olive Paste, which only takes 10 minutes to prepare and it will impress everyone!
Mustard, Soy Sauce and others…
All these goodies have been created to make our lives easier. More specifically, they give a wonderful taste to our food, while at the same time they can accompany in a wonderful way another dish as dips. Personally, I usually use these ingredients, such as mustard, soy sauce and bbq sauce, a lot in marinades. A typical example is my favorite Soy Souvlaki, which I and everyone who tried it absolutely loved it! Also, who hasn’t been bored at some point of cooking and decided to fry a few potatoes with tomato sauce or mustard? So, don’t forget to keep in your fridge certain quantities of various such materials.
Jams in different flavors
Last but not least, jams can be really useful as a spread in our breakfast, but they are also an ideal ingredient for a salad sauce. It may sound strange, but you need to trust me on this one. By adding a little white vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper (optional), you can make dreamy sauces that will accompany your salads and they will even be completely different from each other if you just change the flavor of the jam you use. Also, if you add your favorite jam to a small bowl, you can accompany the delicious breadsticks you want and the parmesan you love.
So, after analyzing the most important products that our fridge should have, I will be happy for you to leave me a comment under the article or to send me a message on Social Media with your favorite and most essential things that are always in your fridge! I am looking forward to seeing you in the next article… Till then…
Have a nice cooking session!
